PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have acquired Shaquille O’Neal in a stunning, blockbuster deal that sends four-time All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat.
The improbable pairing of the speedy Suns and the slow but once-mighty O’Neal became official when he cleared a physical exam Wednesday.
The trade, a dramatic move by first-year Phoenix general manager Steve Kerr, signals an unexpected change in philosophy for the Suns, adding a 7-foot-1, 325-pound center who has won four NBA championships but has been plagued by injuries in recent years and turns 36 next month. O’Neal has been out with a hip injury and underwent an MRI exam in Miami on Tuesday. He flew to Phoenix on Wednesday for the physical.
O’Neal has averaged 25.6 points and 11.5 rebounds in his 14-plus NBA seasons.
This season, plagued by injuries and going through a divorce, he’s averaging 14.2 points. His 14-year streak as an All-Star choice came to an end this year.
He missed much of the 2006-07 season with a knee injury and finished that year with career-lows in games (40), scoring (17.3 points), rebounds (7.4), minutes (28.4) and free-throw percentage (.422).

I think Miami got the better end of this deal. Shaq is done. It’s time for Miami to rebuild and Marion is a great start. I think it’s not far stretched to see Wade leaving Miami if they don’t make some moves to get him support over the next 2 seasons. This move is just for that. They got what they wanted out of Shaq, a championship, it’s time to move on.
For the Suns, not sure what they were thinking. I can only think of a few reasons they’d want him - mainly, they weren’t getting along with Marion anymore to what the team wanted; second being getting Amare off the center spot so he can be more effective, cause really he’s not a center. Maybe even ticket sales, though I doubt they have problems selling out.
How is he going to fit with the Suns run-n-gun offense? He can barely run, much less gun. In half court sets, I’m sure he’ll be useful with Nash breaking down the D and having the choice of Amare or Shaq to throw it down. But don’t count on him on fast breaks, that’s for sure.
Either way, will be interesting.
Anyway, wasn’t this site supposed to be about the Lakers and not ex-Lakers?

I think Miami got the better end of the deal as well…even if Marion opts out next year, it will clear cap space to get someone else to play along Wade.
As far as Suns, they just got scared of the LAKERS…seeing how big we got with Pau. But Shaq is done…no way he can keep up with them. They say he will get motivated and get in shape…but at 35 that is very unlikely.
As far as this being a Lakers site…it sure is…and moves like this does effect the Lakers!

I still can’t beleive the Suns really traded Shawn for Shaq. Maybe they wanted a bigman to gaurd Gasol or Bynum but Shaq? God, Bynum or Gasol are both much faster then him. And their stats are better by the way.

I think it was a good trade for both teams marion wanted out I look at it this way its been years and you havent wont with marion so why not trade for shaq, Suns got a good deal and the reason they did it is for the spurs its not what shaq can do its him being on the floor and amare going back to his real position just imagine now duncan has to guard shaq who will guard amare. plus his 4 rings brings championship experiance to a team with no players with a ring.
