EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Kobe Bryant was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right pinkie finger Thursday and the Lakers All-Star has decided not to undergo surgery that could sideline him for six weeks.

The damage occurred when Bryant dislocated the finger at New Jersey on Feb. 5, and was aggravated in Wednesday night’s game at Minnesota.

The team said Thursday that the damage was more extensive than first believed. There is a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and avulsion fracture, in which a small bone fragment had been pulled off by a tendon.

Bryant was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Steven Shin, a hand specialist who recommended surgery to repair the ligament.

“My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest,” Bryant said in statement.

“I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer’s Olympic Games. But this is an injury that myself and the Lakers medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis.”

It was unclear if Bryant will play in Sunday’s All-Game at New Orleans. But he will skip the 3-point shooting contest, with Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas replacing him.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — After two weeks and nine straight games on the road, the Los Angeles Lakers are returning home with Pau Gasol and an impressive 7-2 record.

Though Kobe Bryant’s finger could use some rest, the Lakers sure don’t need a break. Bryant scored 29 points, Gasol pitched in another well-rounded game, Lamar Odom patched together a triple-double, and the Lakers breezed past the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-92 on Wednesday night. “What’s not to like?” Gasol said after scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds. “We have an amazing team, great players here and a great coaching staff. It’s just another level, a level I haven’t had a chance to experience in my career.” The nine straight games away from home were the longest such string for the Lakers since the NBA went to an 82-game schedule in 1976. They did more on this journey than just bring the third-best record in the Western Conference into the All-Star break, though. Two weeks ago, they acquired Gasol from Memphis in the first of a series of headliner trades this month that will shape the playoff race and the postseason in this stacked-as-ever conference. Los Angeles is 7-1 since the deal, 5-1 with Gasol on the court. The shaggy, scruffy, 7-footer from Spain has not disappointed, providing the tough-to-please Bryant plenty to be happy about and averaging 20.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in six games. Gasol blocked three shots and worked his way inside whenever he wanted for high-arching jumpers, finishing 9-for-11 from the field. Though the defense can be better and they have been prone to late-game lapses, the Lakers are clearly having fun and poised for a strong spring. “It’s a tight group,” coach Phil Jackson said. “It makes working a lot easier.” Both Gasol and Bryant sat out the fourth quarter. Odom finished with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists and headed to the bench seconds after getting the last dish he needed for the triple-double.”I think as we continue to win, we’ll start to realize what I do bring to the team,” Odom said. “It’s not about me. At the end of the day, it’s about winning.”

Jason Kidd and Malik Allen are heading to Dallas for Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George and Maurice Ager, $3 million and 1st round picks this off-season and in 2010.

This trade will be the NBA’s third blockbuster trade this month, starting with Pau Gasol to LA, then Shaq to Pheonix and now Kidd to Dallas.

This will be interesting to see how it plays out. I think they’ll still flop even with Kidd. Their main guy, Dirk, will always be a flake in the playoff crunch time. I feel bad for Kidd going to a team with no heart.

MVP RACE

Filed Under NBA | 5 Comments

So far were halfway into the season we seen some disapointmens ” Heat,Bulls, Nets, SHAQ, ” & surprises ” New Orleans, Gasol trade,” but the MVP race is no surprise this year.  MVP top 3

Player - why he will win MVP - why he wont win MVP

K. Bryant - second leading scorer, team winning, unselfish this year - KG & L. James

G. Garnett - Best team, Great stats, unselfish play - if misses to many games or bad celtics second half

L. James - Just look at his stats “enough said” - team record

My pridiction Garnett over Kobe

- Narbeh

Kobe scored 31 Pau added 26 as they improve to 6-2 on the current road trip.

They should be 8-0 on this trip…2 stupid losses, against Detriot and Altanta!

The Lakers signed C DJ Mbenga for the rest of the season after his second 10-day contract expired. Mbenga was brought in when C Andrew Bynum was sidelined with his left knee injury last month.

Next Game: Wednesday Lakers @ Timberwolves - TV: KCAL @ 5PM

GUYS YOU NEED TO READ THIS. THE SPURS ARE SCARED.

Grizzlies head coach Marc Iavaroni has heard the critics lambasting Memphis’ management for the Pau Gasol trade to the Lakers, most notably the strong words from San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. He just chooses to ignore them.

“[Popovich is] a great coach and they do a good job there,” Iavaroni told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “I don’t read into anyone else’s comments. That’s just the nature of the league. People have a right to their opinion. We’re just taking care of our best interests.”

Popovich slammed Memphis for a trade that many around the NBA thought favored the Lakers.

“What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension,” Popovich told SI.com. “There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committee that oversees NBA trades. I would have voted no to the LA trade.”

In the deal, Memphis acquired Kwame Brown and his expiring $9 million contract, rookie Javaris Crittenton, the rights to Marc Gasol and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010.

As a result of the trade, the Grizzlies could have as much as $17 million available under the salary cap that could help them sign free agents over the summer.

AND I THINK THAT 17 MILLION AVAILABLE IS THE MONEY THAT WILL BRING SHAWN MARION OVER TO THE LAKERS FROM MIAMI.

Very nice game Lakers played today against Miami. Tomorrow Charlotte’s turn… I can’t wait until Andrew gets back… I can already see the Lakers taking over NBA.
